Which foundation type fits an eastern-CT lot best?

Accepted Answer

Full basement is the eastern-CT default for residential — frost depth makes the deeper foundation a relatively small cost adder once you're already digging. Slab-on-grade works for unheated garages and outbuildings where frost-protected design carries it. Crawl spaces are mostly a legacy of older homes; we recommend full basement on new construction unless the site can't accommodate the depth. Pier and beam is rare here outside very specific terrain.

What's the over-dig dimension we work with?

Accepted Answer

Plan dimensions of the foundation plus 12-18 inches of working room around the perimeter. Less than 12 inches and the foundation crew can't set forms cleanly. More than 18 inches and we're moving extra dirt for no reason. The over-dig gets backfilled with crushed stone for drainage after the wall cures, compacted in 8-inch lifts to within 6 inches of finish grade, then topped with the topsoil from the dig.

What's the typical cost of a foundation cut on a clean lot?

Accepted Answer

$4-12k for a residential foundation cut on a clean lot with workable soils. Adds for ledge breakout ($40-100/cubic yard depending on rock hardness), high water table (footing drain + pump), tight access (smaller machines, longer cycles), and import/export of fill material if cut-and-fill doesn't balance. Commercial pads run higher per square foot, mostly from the larger working area and longer schedule.

Do you coordinate with the concrete sub or self-perform?

Either, depending on the job. On our own builds (single contract through Roberts Construction) we use the foundation sub we've worked with for years. For builder customers, we excavate to the sub's spec and timeline — the foundation crew shows up to a clean dry hole with stakes set. We don't pour the wall ourselves; we own the dig and the backfill on both sides of it.

How do you handle the cut on a sloped lot?

Cut-and-fill design balanced where possible to avoid trucking material on or off site. Daylight basements (where part of the wall is exposed at the downhill side) work on slopes from 8-20% — the wall is taller on the uphill side, shorter on the downhill, with a walkout door at the low side. Slopes steeper than 20% usually push the design toward stepped foundations or a different building footprint orientation.

Can you dig a foundation in winter?

Accepted Answer

Yes with a frost ripper or hydraulic breaker for the surface, but concrete pours below 25°F need heated forms or admixtures. We schedule planned new-construction excavation between April and November where possible. The frost itself doesn't stop the dig; it stops the foundation crew from pouring cleanly afterwards, which is what drives the scheduling decision.
