Surface boulders vs. bedrock — what are we removing?

Accepted Answer

Different jobs. Surface boulders (free-standing rocks dropped by glaciation) we lift with the excavator and haul off or relocate. Common across all of eastern CT — a 4-ton boulder in the lawn isn't rare. Bedrock (continuous in-situ rock under the soil) we break with a hydraulic breaker (rock hammer) to make the dig possible. Sterling and Lisbon hit bedrock most often; Plainfield bottomland rarely does.

What's the hydraulic breaker actually do?

Mounted on the excavator stick in place of the bucket. Hydraulic-driven impact tool that delivers 1,000-2,000 ft-lbs of force per blow at 400-800 blows per minute. Cuts through bedrock by fragmenting it from the surface inward — we work corner by corner across the rock face. Production rate depends on rock hardness: 5-15 cubic yards per day for typical eastern-CT ledge. Granite is harder; some basalt and quartzite is harder still.

Do you blast?

No — we don't carry blasting capability in-house. CT licensure for blasting is separate from excavation contractor licensure and requires specialty insurance. When a job has too much rock for breaking alone (foundation cuts through deep ledge, large pad sites in granite), we coordinate with a CT-licensed blasting contractor. Most jobs we run get done with the breaker; blasting is reserved for unusual quantities.

What's the cost adder for rock work on a foundation cut?

Accepted Answer

$40-100 per cubic yard for hydraulic breaking, depending on rock hardness and quantity. A typical Sterling foundation might need 5-15 cubic yards of rock work; on the high end that's $1,500 added to the foundation cost. We test-pit before quoting so the contingency is a real number, not a guess. Some lots reveal 30-50 cubic yards of ledge, which substantially changes the project economics.

Where do the rocks go?

Accepted Answer

Three destinations. (1) Re-used on site as fill, retaining-wall stone, or landscape features. Many clients want to keep boulders for landscape use — we set them where they want before backfilling. (2) Hauled to a stone recycler or construction-fill yard. (3) Sold to landscape supply yards if the boulders are display-quality (clean, weathered, characterful). Removal cost depends partly on which path we use.

Question 6

Can you remove a single boulder from a finished landscape?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a common request once a lot gets developed. We bring a mini-excavator or compact equipment to minimize landscape disturbance, dig around the boulder, lift it out, haul it off (or relocate on the property), and backfill the hole. Lawn typically recovers in one season. Boulders in the 1-3 ton range are routine; bigger pieces sometimes need a larger machine that requires more access disturbance.
